Waldo to lead East boys’ soccer

May 20, 2009

By DANIEL PIKE, The Daily News

The Warren East High School boys’ soccer program has seen more than its share ofDarren Waldo head coaching turnover this decade, but Darren Waldo says he intends to finally bring stability to the Raiders.

Waldo, 30, was introduced as Warren East’s new coach Thursday, making him the Raiders’ sixth leader since the 2002 season. But in order for Warren East to consistently compete with local soccer powers Bowling Green and Greenwood, Waldo thinks consistency might be the most important factor.

“There’s a lot of strength here as far as sports go,” said Waldo, a West Virginia native who grew up in northern Ohio. “There’s a lot of energy, and I see there’s a lot of upside here as far as potential to grow. … Hopefully, we’ll be able to push ourselves and play catch-up.”

Waldo – who most recently served as an assistant coach with the Greenwood High School lacrosse program – played soccer at NCAA Division II Ohio Valley University, then later served as that school’s women’s soccer coach for one season.

Waldo, currently an instructional aide at Drakes Creek Middle School, also was a prep soccer coach in West Virginia and the head wrestling coach at Hopkinsville High School.

Waldo laid out a long-term plan for the Raider program in interviews with Warren East administrators. Primarily, Waldo wants to help soccer take root not just at the high school, but throughout the Warren East community.

“I’d like to see us turn into a program that’s very similar to Greenwood – they’ve got three programs in one, a varsity program, a JV program and a middle school program…,” Waldo said. “I’d like to see us get the mindset here in this community that soccer is a legit sport.”

In the past four seasons, Warren East is 12-46-7 overall. The Raiders last posted a winning season with a 7-5-3 campaign in 2004.
